Robert Jack, Transmissions Are Growing, 2007, Casein on wood, 32 x 48 inches

New York artist, Robert Jack, opens his second San Francisco exhibition at Brian Gross Fine Art on Thursday, November 1, with a reception for the artist from 5:30-7:30 pm. The exhibition will consist of a series of paintings made of casein on wood, reflecting his investigations of natural patterns and biological structures. The exhibition continues through December 22, 2007.
Known previously for drawings of small burn marks on paper, Robert Jack continues exploring ideas based on microbiologic structures and forms. Here, the artist moves on to a larger format, the largest paintings measuring 32 x 48 inches in size. Working with tiny brush marks of casein on wood, these minimalist, structural paintings are far from simple. Each painting has a limited palette, and the colors vary from earth reds over yellow and red over pink to pale green over Vandyke brown. The arrangement of the repeated marks suggest rigorous thought yet the slight imperfections and the patterns that slowly emerge take on an intuitive, organic quality. Jack sees the creation of the paintings as a form of history, taking elements from nature that have evolved over eons of time according to Darwinian theory and recombining them in new ways.
Robert Jack, born in 1971 in New Haven, Connecticut, received his BS in Landscape Architecture from The City College of New York in 1994. His work has been exhibited in numerous group exhibitions in the United States as well as in Japan and Spain. The artist lives and works in New York.
